Web design in St Ives

St Ives is a market town on the River Great Ouse in Huntingdonshire, known for its 15th-century bridge with a chapel built into it. The guided busway links it to Cambridge, and its businesses serve townspeople, visitors and the villages along the river.

A riverside market town

St Ives grew as a crossing and trading point on the Great Ouse. A wooden bridge stood here from 1107; the stone bridge that replaced it was completed in 1425, and the chapel, dedicated to St Leger, was added in 1426. It is one of only four surviving bridges in England with a chapel, the others being at Rotherham, Wakefield and Bradford-on-Avon. During the Civil War part of the bridge was blown up by Cromwell's troops to stop Royalist forces reaching London. Today the bridge and chapel are Grade I listed and a scheduled monument, and 2026 marks six hundred years of the bridge with its chapel.

That heritage, the riverside and the town centre make St Ives a destination for day visitors as well as a working town for a large local population.

The busway and the Cambridge connection

The Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, which opened in August 2011, runs from Huntingdon through St Ives to Cambridge. It follows the route of the former Cambridge to Huntingdon railway, with a park and ride site south of the town where the guided section begins. Buses run through Histon and Impington to the Cambridge Science Park and on into the city.

For local businesses, the busway does two things. It lets many residents commute to Cambridge, which means more spending on services in the evenings and at weekends in St Ives. And it means firms based here can work comfortably with clients across Cambridge without the cost of city premises.

What St Ives businesses need from a website

  • Riverside hospitality: pubs, cafés and restaurants near the quay and the bridge, plus boat hire and outdoor activity providers. Visitors check opening times, menus and booking on their phones before they set off.
  • Town-centre retail: independent shops competing with Huntingdon, Cambridge and online retailers. Click and collect, accurate stock information and a clear sense of what makes the shop worth visiting matter.
  • Trades: builders, electricians, plumbers, landscapers and kitchen fitters covering St Ives, Huntingdon, the Hemingfords, Houghton and villages towards Cambridge.
  • Professional services: accountants, solicitors, financial advisers and estate agents serving a broad, settled population.

One complication is the name. There is a much better-known St Ives in Cornwall, and many national directories, travel sites and search results default to it. A St Ives, Cambridgeshire business needs its website and listings to make the location unmistakable: "St Ives, Cambridgeshire", the postcode district, the River Great Ouse, Huntingdonshire and nearby places. That helps search engines and stops confused visitors calling about holiday cottages in Cornwall.

Trades and the villages along the river

Many St Ives tradespeople work across a wide patch. The best way to show it is not a page per village with the same text, but a genuine record of work: a kitchen in Hemingford Grey, a garden in Houghton, a roof in Fenstanton. Photographs of real projects with a short description of the job tell both search engines and customers where you work and what you do.

Riverside realities

Being on the Great Ouse brings flooding into many conversations about property in the area. Builders, surveyors, insurers and landscapers who explain how they handle flood-related work, without alarmism, provide exactly the kind of practical local content that earns trust and search visibility.

St Ives tip: add LocalBusiness structured data with your full address and coordinates, and use "St Ives, Cambridgeshire" consistently in page titles. It is a small technical step that helps separate you from the Cornish town.
